Missie Beckmann chosen for the Holiday Excellence Award

20241010_153942Missie Beckmann grew up in the small town of Wells in southern Minnesota.  She and her daughter moved to Ames, Iowa for about four years before moving back to her hometown.  When her daughter went off on her own, Missie decided to make a change and moved to the Cologne area, where she rented a friend’s basement apartment and started working at the Holiday Station.  “I’ve been in management on and off for nearly thirty years,” she said.  “I started here in April, and met my fiancé, who was a customer of the store, in August.   That was nine years ago.  It’s amazing how fast time has gone!”
Missie loves working at the store, because, she says, she honestly feels like she’s where she’s supposed to be.  “People have asked me if I wanted to try excelling at something else, but I really take pride in my job.  I’m the manager, but I do everything my associates do, and I don’t take that role for granted.  I find joy in training my associates in the way I would want to be trained.”
Missie started as an associate in the Cologne store, then was promoted to work in management in the Waverly store.  It was under Missie’s management that the Waverly store won the pinnacle award last year for store excellence.  This year, she had the opportunity to be chosen among 101 potential franchise managers for the Excellence Award, and she feels it is an incredible honor that she was chosen.   To be in the nomination, a holiday markets manager will conduct regular inspections of your store, and make sure that it is running smoothly.  The manager will ensure that product is up to date, the store is clean and well-organized, sales are up to Holiday standards, and staff is courteous with customers.  “Basically, the nomination goes through different levels of management, all the way up to the Vice President of the company, who gave me the award. I was so appreciative of what he said, that me and my associates are happy about greeting customers, and how welcoming we are, as well as how efficiently we stock the store. It was awesome to be recognized like that.”
Missie can’t express enough her appreciation for the company. “I love working for Mid-County.  It’s very family oriented, and it feels like we’re just one big family.  I like it because I’m not just a number here, and the coop appreciates the actual individual.”
Missie takes pride in being able to donate to different community needs throughout the year.  “Mid-County is also very community oriented; we’re all about helping the community, and that helps us as a local business.”
Missie received a trophy for her achievement in winning the Excellence Award, and also a travel voucher for a well-deserved vacation.  She and her fiancé are planning a cruise, hopefully somewhere warm and tropical, and she looks forward to that.  In her spare time, Missie enjoys spending time with her fiancé’s grandchildren, scrapbooking and camping.
Missie enjoys her time, both at work and at home, saying, “I’m very happy with where I’m at.”

They enjoyed Trivia nights at B-Dubs, Renaissance Festivals and exploring bookstores and special weekends in Duluth and Red Wing. DaleDale R. Schmitz
July 17, 1961 – January 17, 2024

Dale Roger Schmitz, 62, of Cologne passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2024.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial Saturday, January 27, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Bernard Catholic Church (210 Church Street East) in Cologne with Father Bill Peterson as Celebrant of the Mass. Visitation, Saturday, 9:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M. at the church. Interment at St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery in Cologne.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dale Schmitz, a dedicated son, brother, uncle, friend. Faith, farming, firefighting, family, and friends were the most important things in Dale’s life.

Dale was born in Waconia, July 17, 1961 to Roger and JoAnn (Notermann) Schmitz. Dale’s love for farming began early in his life. Growing up surrounded by the beauty of the land, he developed a passion for agriculture that would shape the course of his journey.

Growing up on the family farm, Dale always had a passion for raising beef cattle and hogs. Always waiting for the first day in the fields in spring and the start of fall harvest, if there was a tractor to be driven, Dale was there.

Dale continued his farming passion by working at neighboring farms, especially the Kugath farm. His farming passion cultivated his career at Mid-County Co-op as an agronomy applicator, helping the local farmers prepare their fields for planting. Later, Dale shifted his talents to the Mid-County fuel and LP Gas team.

Dale was a valued member of the Mid-County Co-op family. His contributions to the cooperative went beyond his role; he was a trusted colleague and a friend to many. His work ethic, kindness, and willingness to lend a hand made him an integral part of the Mid-County community.

For 37 years, Dale served as a beacon of strength and bravery as a volunteer firefighter in Cologne. Whether battling flames, aiding during emergencies, or offering comfort to those in distress, Dale’s commitment to his community was unwavering. His dedication and sacrifice will forever be remembered as an integral part of Cologne’s safety and security.

When Dale was not working, he enjoyed time with family and friends. He loved going on family vacations, spending time with his nieces, nephew and great niece and nephews and helping care for his elderly parents. Dale had many friends. He enjoyed time spent at the local pub where he spent a dollar or two on Pull Tabs.

Dale is preceded in death by his grandparents, Martin and Eleanore Schmitz, Arnold and Evelyn Notermann.

Dale is survived by his parents, Roger and JoAnn Schmitz; sister Nancy (Vern) Elke; brother Tom Schmitz; nieces and nephew Mackenzie (Shane) Lobitz, Kelsey Bakeberg (fiance James Winterhalter), Mason Storms; great niece and nephews Elena Bakeberg, Brooks Lobitz, Carson Lobitz, Cullen Bakeberg.

Urn Bearers are Mason Storms, Mackenzie Lobitz, Kelsey Bakeberg.
